How to Read WHOIS Results

FieldWhat It Tells You
OrganizationThe company or entity that has been allocated this IP block. Examples: Google LLC, Amazon.com, Cloudflare Inc.
Network Range (CIDR)The IP address block range in CIDR notation (e.g., 8.8.8.0/24). Shows how many IPs are in this allocation.
ASN / AS NameThe Autonomous System Number and its registered name. ASNs are used for BGP routing on the internet.
Net TypeIndicates how the IP block was allocated: Direct Allocation, Direct Assignment, Reallocated, etc.
RIR / RegistryThe Regional Internet Registry that manages this IP block (ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, or AFRINIC).
CountryThe country where the IP block is registered — not necessarily where traffic exits.
Registration DateWhen this IP block was first registered with the RIR.
Updated DateThe last time the registration record was modified.
Abuse ContactEmail address for reporting network abuse, spam, or malicious activity originating from this IP block.

Common Use Cases

  • Abuse & Spam Reporting

Find the abuse contact email for any IP to report spam, DDoS attacks, port scanning, or other malicious activity directly to the network owner.

  • Network Research & BGP Analysis

Check ASN, CIDR range, and registration dates to understand IP routing, peering relationships, and network topology.

  • Security Investigation

Verify the owning organization behind suspicious IPs. Determine if an IP belongs to a hosting provider, VPN service, or legitimate enterprise.

  • Domain/IP Ownership Verification

Confirm who controls an IP range or domain before engaging in business transactions, partnerships, or legal proceedings.

  • Networking Education

Learn how IP address allocation works, understand CIDR notation, and explore the global internet governance structure through real-world lookups.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is IP WHOIS lookup?

IP WHOIS lookup is a free tool that retrieves public registration information about an IP address — including the owning organization, ASN (Autonomous System Number), CIDR network range, registration and update dates, RIR registry, country, and abuse contact email. It queries the global WHOIS/RDAP system maintained by the five Regional Internet Registries (ARIN, RIPE NCC, APNIC, LACNIC, AFRINIC).

How do I perform an IP WHOIS lookup?

Enter any IPv4 or IPv6 address (or domain name) into the search box and click 'Lookup WHOIS'. Our tool queries real-time RDAP data to show the organization that owns the IP, the network range, ASN, country, RIR registry, and abuse contacts. Results appear in a clean card format with collapsible details.

What information can I get from an IP WHOIS lookup?

A WHOIS lookup returns: Organization name, CIDR network range (e.g., 8.8.8.0/24), ASN and AS name, Net type (Direct Allocation, etc.), RIR registry (ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, or AFRINIC), Country, Registration and last-updated dates, and Abuse contact email for reporting issues.

Can I look up domain WHOIS with this tool?

Yes. This tool supports both IP addresses and domain names. For domains, it retrieves registrar information, registration/expiration dates, name servers, and registrant details (when not privacy-protected).

What is a Regional Internet Registry (RIR)?

RIRs are organizations that manage the allocation and registration of IP addresses within specific world regions. The five RIRs are: ARIN (North America), RIPE NCC (Europe/Middle East/Central Asia), APNIC (Asia-Pacific), LACNIC (Latin America/Caribbean), and AFRINIC (Africa). Each maintains its own WHOIS database.

What is an ASN and why does it matter?

An ASN (Autonomous System Number) is a unique identifier assigned to a network or group of networks managed by a single organization (like an ISP or large enterprise). Knowing the ASN helps understand who controls the IP address, what routing policies are in place, and whether the IP belongs to a hosting provider or residential ISP.

How is this different from IP Location Lookup?

IP Location Lookup shows the geographic location, ISP, and connection type of an IP. IP WHOIS Lookup goes deeper — it reveals the official registration data from the RIR databases: the organization that owns the IP block, the exact network CIDR range, ASN details, and administrative/abuse contacts. Use WHOIS for ownership research; use Location for geolocation.

What is RDAP and how is it different from WHOIS?

RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern replacement for the traditional WHOIS protocol. It returns structured JSON data instead of plain text, supports internationalized registration data, provides differentiated access levels, and includes built-in HTTPS encryption. This tool uses RDAP when available.

Is WHOIS data always available for every IP?

Not always. Some IP blocks, especially those used by VPNs, proxies, or private networks, may show limited WHOIS data. Additionally, certain registries may restrict access or redact some fields. If no WHOIS data is found, the tool will display whatever information is publicly available.

Does this tool expose the querying user's identity?

No. All WHOIS queries are performed from Rola-IP's servers, not your browser. The target IP's registry only sees our query server's IP address. Your personal IP and identity are never exposed to the WHOIS databases being queried.
