Understanding Proxy Speed Metrics

What each metric means and what numbers to aim for.

For web scraping, a proxy with TTFB under 500ms and a failure rate below 20% is generally usable. For production scraping, aim for TTFB under 200ms. Our test measures Ping, TTFB, and download speed across 4 real-world endpoints (Google, Cloudflare, Amazon, httpbin) over 5 rounds.

Ping (ms)

TCP connection round-trip time. Measures how fast the proxy establishes a connection. Under 300ms is acceptable; under 100ms is excellent.

TTFB (ms)

Time to First Byte. The most critical metric for web scraping — it directly determines how fast pages load. Under 500ms is usable; under 200ms is ideal.

Speed (KB/s)

Download throughput. Matters for large-file downloads and multi-page scraping. Over 500 KB/s is good; under 100 KB/s is too slow for most tasks.

What Makes a Proxy Fast or Slow?
