Understand your IPv4 and IPv6 connection

What this test checks

This tool sends separate HTTPS requests to an IPv4 public endpoint and an IPv6 public endpoint. A successful result means this browser reached that protocol's endpoint during this check. It does not measure your broadband speed, test every website, or prove that a route will always perform the same way.

IPv4 vs IPv6

IPv4 and IPv6 are internet protocols that can run side by side. IPv4 uses shorter numeric addresses, while IPv6 provides a much larger address space. A dual-stack connection can use both protocols, and a website may be reached over either one depending on its DNS records and your network route.

Why IPv6 can be slow

Modern browsers can try IPv6 and IPv4 in parallel or prefer IPv6 before falling back to IPv4. This behavior is often called Happy Eyeballs. If an IPv6 route is reachable but slow or unstable, the first connection to a website can take longer before the browser falls back. This test compares one IPv4 and one IPv6 request to help identify that pattern, but a single result is not a full performance benchmark.

How to troubleshoot IPv6 connectivity

Check IPv6 service from your provider

Your provider may not have assigned IPv6 service to this connection. Contact your broadband or mobile provider to confirm that your plan and line have an IPv6 prefix.

Check your router configuration

Check whether IPv6 and prefix delegation are enabled on your router. Review the WAN IPv6 mode, prefix delegation, and bridge settings, then reconnect the router before you test again.

Step 3

Check the active network adapter on your device

Check that IPv6 is enabled for the active network adapter on this device. Reconnect the network or restart the device after changing the setting, then run this check again.

Why IPv4 and IPv6 can use different exit paths

IPv4 and IPv6 can leave the same device through different networks. For example, a VPN may route IPv4 traffic while IPv6 goes directly to your provider, or a company network may apply different policies to each protocol. Different paths do not automatically mean that a leak has occurred. Use a dedicated DNS or WebRTC leak test when you need to check privacy routing in more detail.
